Budapest makes history!

The Hungarian Swimming Federation and the city of Budapest will be the first in the world to achieve the “Aquatic Grand Slam”, so to host the four most important swimming/aquatics events in the sport: the World Aquatics Championships (2017, 2022), the Swimming World Cup (2018, 2019, 2021, 2023), the World Junior Swimming Championships (2019) and the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) in December 2024.

Budapest is the first city in the world (and Hungary is also the first country) to host all the World Aquatics swimming events: the World Championships in 2017 and 2022, the Junior World Championships in 2019, the World Cup Series in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023, and the World Championships (25m) in 2024 – Duna Arena will host the World Short Course Championships from 10-15 December 2024 – making Duna Arena, Budapest and Hungary a sport history.

Who doesn’t remember the wonderful 2017 World Championships in Budapest, which was hailed as the best ever? The World Championships that raised the bar for World Aquatics’ organisation of the sport to such a high level that the Budapest World Championships have since become the etalon of World Aquatics. In fact, the World Championships were so successful that the World Aquatics has complete confidence in the Hungarian organizing team, whether it is the new Champions Swim Series or the World Cup Series right after the pandemics.

Since its inauguration, the Duna Arena has hosted not only swimming competitions, but also water polo, artistic swimming and diving events. The Duna Arena, which has been called one of the best swimming complexes in the world, has hosted the Synchronized Swimming World Cup, the World Junior Synchronized Swimming Championships, the Super Final of the Men’s Water Polo World League, the Champions Swim Series and the 2019 World Junior Swimming Championships.

In 2022, the biggest event of the aquatics sports had returned with the World Championships, which organizers completed in a world-record time of just 4 months. Looking to the future, Hungary’s capital will host the World Short Course Swimming Championships in December 2024, and the World Aquatics Championships will return to Budapest in the summer of 2027, 10 years after the first World Championships!
